Array Carrying my new Kelty day-pack (so light I barely felt it), I climbed the steps by the pond for a full 45 minutes, feeling energetic the entire time. The water in the pond was quietly moving in the transient breezes, a few gulls were sweeping back and forth overhead, and the poetry of Shakespeare was coming through my headphones as well as from behind me, where the actors were painstakingly practicing their lines.

Chef refreshed the starter dough, while we all worked on making short dough. We took our ladle, scooped our dough into the pan and hopped them into the oven, of course all this took much longer than it sounds. Well i’m on the train for a couple of stops and i’m like ok here’s my stop…… In the mist of the heat outside and my going fatigue I seemed to get back on the same train that I was on before getting my drink, but just the other way ( back to school) so then I had to do the whole trip all over again.

A Million Miles Away: I Thought I’d Forget

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Array I head inside whenever it gets dark and start to prep dinner, host-ma and son head for the cow. Around 9 or 10 my host mom pokes her head in the room and we have our Romanian lesson. Mondays and Thursdays I have basketball practice at the high school (I teach at the middle school), after which I head to my partner teacher’s house for planning sessions. Wednesdays I don’t have class, but have been using the time to act as tech support for the computer labs in our region, or to head to the regional center to get mail or use the Internet. Saturdays have been used almost exclusively for working in the fields, tending our six hectares, and Sundays are split between heading into the regional center to go shopping at the “piaÅ£a”

-ne Yes, today we have pictures of the United States. In August 1992 I went back to Penn State for my senior year, and early in September I went with two of my friends to Pittsburgh to visit another friend of mine, who was attending the University of Pittsburgh (boo!) at the time. I love this picture - What exactly did we do last night?  That’s all for this time. But if you like poisonings, strange, possibly evil books, mad monks, guys with stumps for hands, insidious government agencies, and polygamists - well, you can’t go wrong!

Not quite on holidayOstensibly the European Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance of the European Communities go off on their holidays on Monday 17 July and won’t be back till Sunday 3 September. However, unwilling to pack their bags without tackling just one more case for luck, the ECJ is coming in on Tuesday to deliver its ruling in Case C-214/05 P Sergio Rossi SpA v OHIM. Left: Sissi Rossi luggageThis is an appeal against the judgment of the Court of First Instance of 1 March 2005 in Case T-169/03 in the spat between the owner of the MISS ROSSI mark and the subsequent applicant to register the word mark SISSI ROSSI. Advocate General Kokott advised the ECJ to dismiss the appeal (see the IPKat’s earlier post here). The IPKat wishes the members of the ECJ and the CFI a lovely holiday. He thinks they are going to their regular resort in Outer Space, the place from which they bring back some of their more exotic doctrines each year.New EIPR seriesThe IPKat has been looking through the first book in the new EIPR Practice Series: A Practical Guide to Intellectual Property in Mergers & Acquisitions. Authored by series editor Colm MacKernan (Origin), the guide is published by Sweet & Maxwell, from whose website full details can be obtained concerning this volume and the series itself. Consultant editor is Hugh Brett, who masterminded the European Intellectual Property Review itself back in the 1970s and who has presided over its apotheosis from mere journal to iconic brand. What the publisher says: Intellectual Property in acquisitions and mergers an area of growing importance, yet there is little information and in-depth guidance to help practitioners through this specialized subject.A Practical Guide to Intellectual Property in Mergers

I live in the hood. I like it there. My city’s like any other. Drive and within five minutes, you got beauty or death or death and beauty. So I live in the beautiful part of the hood. Working class neighborhood where people are not yet slaves imprisoned in their own home. But a five minute drive and you’re in Boys in Da Hood for real. Where a Nigga’s a Nigger and a Necca will tell him so. I don’t especially like it there, but its my favorite place this year to train. See I sprint. And I sprint. For real. Today, for an hour and one half I was at what I call it the ghetto bowl where the brothers hold their 8 man flag football league. And this isn’t a couple cats from the corner rollin’. These cats take it serious and from the looks of them they mostly ex college athletes who still lift weights. As far as I’m concerned these are representative of the healthiest black men our community has to offer. (right there with the weekend basketballers and some gym rats, weightlifters, gym narcissists and the like) I can tell dese flag cats they don’t run because none of them did sprints and two of thirty light did a light jog as I practiced and they warmed up for their game. I can also tell they don’t run from the following…And I know that you wanna hear about Tyrone and his girl we’ll get there.Like any sprinter I warm up. And because I respect my body and I’m 42 this June. I warm up alot. In the middle of my warm up, I’m asked if I was burnt out from such a long work out. I had only been warming up for a half an hour, including active stretching, high knees, butt kicks one jog around the oval and two one minute cycles of jump rope. I told him that I’ve just started. He laughed. I said that by the time I’m done I’ll run some 40s at 4.5s and might dip down to 4.3 or so. Really? he said, disbelief in his face. Ok I said, to myself, triathlon, recalling the time a brother asked me was I training for a triathlon the first time that I trained there. Now I’m always sprinting when I train. And I will grant that my training can look like a football player trying to get faster I wear a weighted suit, I wear leg weights. I pull a parachute. This has a lot to do with the strength of my legs. I need resistance. Let us realize that I run because of ancestral memories. Racing was very important as a measure of vitality and leadership… Now back to this triathlon. As fast as I was runnin’? He sounded so out of his mind I just thought he simply didn’t know what a track work out was. Just like this cat thinking that my work out was long. In fact it’s intense but short. One and a half hour. That’s it. And that’s a really short track work out. I told this cat who thought my work out was long that in about a month and a half or two I’ll be in world class athlete shape. Really? It take that long? He responded as they laughed.Laughter in the crowd. Cue the clowns. The brothers were absolute fools yucking and doing their best, shit, Ida whipped Massas ass and drove the fuck off. imitation of Eddie’s joke. They talked all kinds of shit about my being slow and what they could do, in whispered tones of course, to each other, but loud enough so I could hear, of course.I go on with my work out. I am by now very used to people believing all kinds of idiocy upon seeing a 180lb man with grey in his beard do all kinds of things. You should see the idiocy I get from the world about my bench press punch training 225 lbs 47 times–So easy I say, post a response doing half the resps 12,000 views in 7 months and countless idiots and their even more idiotic emails later, and still no one has posted a response video doing this exercise. Sprinting and thinkin’ you still got it or got more than you do, I can understand because you jes get out there and run like you always do, right? Wrong. But weights? Punching? You would think…But No….And we now are ready for my point. Now black male culture is very loud, boastful. I understand this. I grew up in it.And on this day while Daddy was listin’ to Dreams of Fuckin’ a R&B Bitch (I ain’t hatin’ I’m jes sayin’.) which was blastin’ from the GS 300 curbside and talkin’ to the cats about the disappearance of the Qdogs, and how every body was so great for bein’ in their late 20s and thirties and being out there the kids had taken over another lane next to me and their little feet were carrying their little bodies down the lanes. At one point. Oh how happy I was watching the young boys who mimicked my exercises. At one point I ran a sub 5.5 second 50 yard dash. I screamed and whooped. The young men proceeded to quiz me. Did you do a personal best? Was that a record? No, I just ran really fast, didnt it look it?” I asked? “Yea!” my new found little friend gushed. Then his big brothers and maybe his daddy began their discussion about how slow I looked and was…See heres the deal. 20 minutes every week on the bike isnt a substitute for world class training. Slow easy bench of light weight in proportion to you own weight is not ARa Martial Art training with 225 lbs, a full 50lbs more than you weigh. Today is not how you was in high school. If you aint run in 200 years, you aint in shape. If you drinkin Tyrone, then you aint got the vitality you once had. If you huffin and puffin with very little exercise the meat you eatin, the shit you puffin, its all tellin on you. Its time to stop. Time to be real with yourself. You cant live a blown up life all week then spend a hour playin ball and stay in shape. But I dont expect you to be me, Im Sesh Ra Ur. It means Im an instructor on the great power of Ra. Literally….Just be you and get it going…..And I know you been down so long, and it hard Across a hundred and tenth street. But you got to be realistic because you create this air of invincibility from lies–you arent going to move the world on steak and potatoes, you aint gonna move no mountain on Mcdonalds. But you know this? And yet still…ya got what you been havin on steak and potatoes and Mickey Ds…Dreams of Fuckin an R

According to the National Institute of Health’s BMI Calculator, a BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. To achieve that dubious honor, I’d need to tip the scales 274 pounds, or another 17 pounds higher than where I was when I started, or another 25 pounds from where I am now.25 pounds.

-ne The news was dreadful. The refrain, it could have been worse is of rather small comfort. There is this chilling line in this WP item: Shoebridge said a second attack was likely because theres no reason for them not to, theyve broken their cover,They will now try to exploit whatever freedom they have left to kill again, because it is likely they will eventually be caught, Shoebridge added. As of now, it is believed that the bombs were detonated by timers as cell phone coverage in the Underground is too spotty to be reliable unlike the train bombings in Madrid which were above ground. It is still possible that they were suicide bombers.

Array And, Lastings Milledge continued his solid spring with a single, an RBI and two great catches in the outfield - as chronicled here in a piece by the tireless Marty Noble at MLB.com.I guess Anderson Hernandez picked a bad time to take a leave of absence from camp, as Kaz Matsui looks to be making a little run at justifying the team’s decision to start the year with him at second. Here’s the money quote from the piece: I dont think theres a guy in here who doesnt think were a better team with Aaron in the bullpen and Brian in the rotation, one veteran player said Sunday. Former ESPN guy Keith Olbermann went a little wacky this week - the story in the Daily News is somewhat hard to follow, but there’s plenty of Keith bashing, which is fun.I happen to like Olbermann - part of his appeal is that he’s a little unpredictable day-to-day, and he’s an amusing, smart guy, that ’s obvious.

Evolution cannot explain how life first appeared on earth8. Mutations are essential to evolution theory, but mutations can only eliminate traits. Natural selection might explain microevolution, but it cannot explain the origin of new species and higher orders of life12. Recent discoveries prove that even at the microscopic level, life has a quality of complexity that could not have come about through evolutionIf you want a judicial opinion of just how scientific Creationism or Intelligent Design are, read the decision from the Dover trial.Amazingly, I found this list on Fark.

In the past nine years, Haitian Hearts has brought 106 children to the U.S. Until October 2002, Haitian Hearts was part of CHOI (i.e. After Haitian Hearts challenged that figure, hospital officials lowered the amount owed to 00,000 and then almost 00,000.EVIDENCE OF PROBLEMIn the last couple of years, SFMC/CHOI has taken actions that have caused Haitian Hearts to question if the hospital has broken the law. Most recently, Haitian Hearts volunteers and then an attorney contacted the hospital to request that any donations and employee contributions made since October 1,2002 be turned over to Haitian Hearts. An OSF physician was donating his overtime hours to Haitian Hearts and his very generous donations never showed up on the computer sheet in OSF Foundation for Haitian Hearts.

United kept beating up the tired Canadians but it took another bad idea by a defender to get United their second goal when Jaime Moreno converted the penalty kick to get the win and tie Jason Kreis as all-time leader in MLS goals. Not to mention the cluster bomblets scattered all over southern Lebanon as a little parting gift just before the ceasefire took effect that are still killing and maiming UN disposal experts.A series of surveys conducted by WorldPublicOpinion.org and its research partners between July 2006 and March 2007, found overwhelming support for enhanced powers for the UN. There would seem to be little understanding of the role of the Security Council and the way the structure of the UN ensures that it can only act when the US, the world’s principal transgressor of ‘international law, agrees, and that when carrots and sticks fail to procure the votes it requires, the US will act without reference to the UN. Indeed, the history of UNIFIL and other UN peacekeeping operations are not such as to instil confidence that they can protect the innocent in zones of conflict, or keep the peace between determined antagonists, much less make peace. So I think we have to interpret the results in the context of an understanding of a myth of UN neutrality and commitment to peace. What respondents seem to be trying to express through these surveys is that they prefer states acted responsibly and that there be some agency to constrain them.In this context, overall 64% in those fourteen countries favoured ‘Giving the UN the authority to go into countries in order to investigate violations of human rights’. According to the report,Not surprisingly the three countries most ready to accept UN decisions are also permanent members of the UN Security Council: China (78%), France (68%), and the United States (60%).

-ne The 2007 WNBA season kicked off this afternoon with the host Detroit Shock receiving their WNBA Championship rings, then beating the Sacramento Monarchs 75-68 in a Finals rematch. In Jenny Boucek’s first game on the sidelines, the Monarchs looked mostly the same as they did under John Whisenant. Yo had one point and three rebounds in about 19 minutes of action. For Detroit, Plenette Pierson played just about as good of a game as she ever has in the WNBA, scoring 22 points on 7-for-15 shooting and pulling down eight rebounds (six offensive).

Despite efforts to win public opinion with a barbecue, GoldSpring moaned that the residents of Silver City [have] always been strongly anti-mining.Great Basin Mine Watch, a Nevada-based conservation group, used the General Mining Act of 1874 to lay claim to a tract of land perilously close to an affluent suburb. Imagine, if you will, the dangers that these Nevada homeowners face on two fronts: Not only do they have to deal with inflated home prices thanks to the predatory practices of Mr. SERIN, but they also have the threat of mining operations in their backyard — also funded and backed by Mr. SERIN.What?

Or Tony Blair, is he doing enough to stop 500,000 deaths of UK citizens per year?How many of these are due to terrorism or violence? It does not take a great leap of imagination to come up with a few ideas of why Iraqi people would want to blame US/UK actions for their sad losses.In fact, Iraq has a population of 26 million people. Odd, eh?Now I am not trying to deny that there have been thousands of deaths casued by war and violence in Iraq;

Gen 13 is another of new title by Wildstorm in that company’s effort to revive numerous failed Image titles from the mid 1990’s. Gen 13 was first appeared in 1994 and was written by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi (There is your typical poor Image writing) and illustrated by J. With that in mind, let’s go ahead and do this review.Creative TeamWriter: Gail SimonePenciler: Talent CaldwellInker: Matt BanningArt Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 4 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: This issue begins with several customers of Tabula Rasa chatting in an internet chat room while watching a live video feed. To be fair, Sarah was a bisexual in the original Gen 13 and that only made her hotter.)We shift to Dr. Cross talking to his assistant Megan. The kids then engage in a group hug as Caitlin says that all they have is each other and they are going to need each other and that they are going to escape.CommentsThe Good: Gen 13 #1 was a rather unimpressive read. I thought that the dialogue between Dr. Cross and Megan was by far the funniest and best written dialogue in this issue. However, if you dig that style of art then you will certainly enjoy Caldwell’s work on this issue. The Bad: Honestly, while reading Gen 13 #1 I thought I was transported back in time to 1994. This issue read like an original Image comic, and that is most definitely not a compliment. This issue was poorly written and came across about as generic as possible.I thought this issue was oddly paced. Now, it is only the first issue and Simone has plenty of time to try and flesh out and develop their personalities, however, it would have been nice to see something a bit more creative and original in this first issue. The storyline itself isn’t all that novel or exciting. Wetworks failed to hook me and now Gen 13 has failed to earn a spot on the Revolution’s pull list. However, with Wildstorm, since they are flooding the market with so many new titles and I already have a full pull list and limited funds I have decided to give these Wildstorm titles just one issue to hook me. Does anyone think that Gen 13 deserves another issue or two to try and earn a spot on my pull list?

Im not saying [if theres stem cell research money or not].I thought this anecdote did a good job of making the case that if you want to make progress in politics sometimes you have to play dirty. However, Blagojevich crossed into bs territory when he said that he wanted his legacy to be to build a progressive movement that would sustain itself beyond his gubernatorial campaign. That’s the progressive movement.

I hope that someday, I will be asked to leave because I came on too strong about the central message of the Gospel. The little town I grew up in was probably more like where Jesus grew up in the fact that, as a kid, most of the town knew who you were and knew who to call when they saw you doing something you shouldn’t be doing. Most people read right over this and miss what happens, in one verse the crowd goes from adoring to angry. I think that this may be more than Jesus stating the obvious point that sometimes people who know us too well have trouble taking us seriously. This may have just been Jesus way of saying, “My ultimate identity does not come from your evaluation of me.”[1] Now Jesus didn’t post his sermon from that day on his weblog so I don’t have a copy of what made everybody upset. Jesus was preaching a radical message of love and grace, a message of generosity and justice a message of peace and hope, especially for those who had no hope, a message designed to turn the world upside down and when he preached it in his hometown, people didn’t like it. My message is from God and the fact that you don’t like it doesn’t make it any less valuable.” Jesus knew that the apostles, if they delivered that same world-changing message the Jesus delivered would sometimes be treated the same way. Your message is from God and the fact that people don’t like it doesn’t make is any less valuable. We are, at times, struggling against churches that think that Christianity is all about judgment and damnation, so we are very clear in our emphasis of Grace, that overwhelming, unmerited love of God that pursues us and pulls into relationship with God no matter what. My message is from God and the fact that people don’t like it doesn’t make is any less valuable. Pastors need to have enough gumption to proclaim the word of the gospel even when it means people at the door won’t say “nice job pastor” The reasons is, no matter how well we are doing, here in our church, at being graceful and kind, however well we are doing praising and worshipping God, the gospel is calling us to look at the world outside. We need to stand up for that message, even when that goes against the me-first, money is king, profit-before people, might before mercy, everyone for themselves mentality of the world. Some believe that we stand up for the gospel by standing on high ground and hurling moral judgments upon people we don’t understand. We think that our task, if we really want to stand firm for the gospel is to go out and tell people to repent. There is a big difference between telling people to repent, change their ways, feel sorry for what they have done, especially when we all still have some ways of our own to change - and telling people about the world changing, counter-cultural message of the gospel, a message of radical transformation, rooted in “compassion, love, generosity of spirit, kindness, peace, social justice,”[3] grace and hope – trusting that this message will touch them and turn their hearts toward God. We have to be willing to proclaim that God news and trust that people’s hearts will be moved toward God. We have to be willing to stand up and say we believe in and are willing to work with God and each other to create a world where no child will go hungry, where money isn’t the most important thing, where the earth is a gift to be protected, where meaning is more important than possessions, where bombs are not the best way to make peace, where generosity wins out over greed every time. Even if people don’t like me or maybe even, if I am lucky, ask me to leave.

Another raid destroyed several houses near the Israeli border and killed at least 16 civilians. The latest deaths mean that Israel’s offensive against Hezbollah and Lebanon has killed at least 130 people since Wednesday. Most of the civilian victims of today’s attacks died when their homes were struck by Israeli bombs or missiles, Lebanese police said.EscalationEarlier Hezbollah killed eight Israeli civilians and wounded a dozen more when it fired 20 long-range missiles at Israel’s northern city of Haifa on Sunday morning.Following the attack, Israel warned Lebanese civilians to evacuate the border areas, saying that it would take unilateral military action to stop Hezbollah from carrying out more rocket attacks. We asked people in seven villages to evacuate the villages for their own safety since we will be operating in those areas, said an Israeli army spokesman.A few hours after issuing the warning, Israeli warplanes struck at several Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.Afterwards, in the village of Aabba, near Nabatiyeh, around 70 km (40 miles) south of the capital, eight bodies were extracted from the debris of two joining houses.Rescue workers said efforts to reach the other bodies were hampered by ongoing bombing raids in the area.In Nabatiyeh Israeli helicopters destroyed a two-storey house, killing three people and wounding 11 others, including three young children, police said.Four civilians were killed and 10 others hurt when their home in the village of Burj Shemali was also hit.Israel’s strategyIsrael’s minister for internal security, Avi Dichter said the raids aimed to put pressure on Lebanon’s government to act against Hezbollah.Tens of thousands of Lebanese who will flee towards the north will create the right pressure on Hezbollah, Dichter told ministers during Israel’s weekly cabinet meeting, AFP reported. The latest air strikes come after five days of Israeli attacks against Lebanese infrastructure including bridges, roads and the country’s only international airport in Beirut. The Israeli army has also said that its special forces are operating on the ground in Lebanon, in conjunction with air and sea forces.AGENCIES

Want to slash those summer power bills, but don’t want to spend a lot of money to do it? Consider planting fast growing trees. Some grow as much as 10 feet in the very first year, quickly providing shade and lowering cooling costs. According to the US Department of Agriculture, well placed trees can reduce overall cooling expenses by as much as 30% and can save 20% – 50% on heating bills. When average annual utility bills run from ,500 - ,500, this could add up to a savings of thousands of dollars in just the first few years. Plus, healthy, mature trees increase property values by as much as 10%, lower stress levels, and clean the air we breathe. Just a few trees can make a big difference. Start by shading the west and east sides of your home. Don’t forget to shade your air conditioning unit; this alone can increase cooling efficiency by 10%. Trees should also be planted near driveways to deflect heat away from your home. A diagram can be found at http://www.fast-growing-trees.com/EnergyDiagram.htm. So what is the fastest growing shade tree? According to the Fast Growing Trees Nursery , it’s the Royal Empress Tree. Nursery Manager Jarred Hicks explains that with a little care, an Empress tree can reach up to ten feet the first full growing season and go on to twenty five feet in just three years. Furthermore, they have a deep taproot that grows down, not out, so you don’t have to worry about disturbing foundations, patios or driveways. Royal Empress Trees have large, one-foot leaves that provide dense shade in the summer then drop in the fall to let sunlight through when needed most. Hicks recommends against Empress trees grown from seed but prefers a process where trees are cloned. He explains, Some of the best Empress mother trees in the world are selected for fast growth, form, and hardiness. We clone these in a laboratory then grow them in our nursery. This guarantees a near perfect tree and one thatlink

Here we read of findings that teens whose moms smoke and now smoke themselves end up with very significant attention problems, which can lead to being singled out as troublesome in school, which can lead to labeling, which can lead to living up to labeling, which can lead to unsocial behavior. Here we find out that CT is one of the nation’s leaders in locking up teens in adult facilities. And here we get the latest report on how teen lockup with adults is counterproductive in most cases and leads to the increasing crime rates we’re now seeing again. Insightful quote from the Corrections director: When you get tough on crime and sentencing, one of the effects is that you have more people in the system, Williams said, adding that increased punishment for DWI was among the most significant policy changes in recent years. When I was a corrections officer, you never saw someone in prison for DWI, he said.
